Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Wells Automotive in Mornington, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Wells Automotive, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Subaru Head Gasket Problems: What Owners Need to Know Subaru vehicles have built a strong reputation across Australia for reliability, all-wheel drive performance and long-term durability. With models from Forester and Outback to Impreza and Liberty, Subaru vehicles are popular with drivers who value dependable motoring and excellent handling. However, like any manufacturer, Subaru vehicles have a number of known issues that owners should understand, and one of the most widely discussed is head gasket failure. At Wells Automotive, we regularly assist Subaru owners throughout Mornington with cooling system inspections, engine diagnostics and preventative servicing designed to identify problems before they become major repairs. Understanding the warning signs of head gasket issues can help reduce the risk of severe engine damage and expensive breakdowns. What Does a Head Gasket Do? A head gasket sits between the engine block and cylinder head and plays a critical role in sealing combustion pressure while keeping coolant and engine oil separated. In Subaru boxer engines, this component experiences unique stresses due to the engine’s horizontally opposed design. Over time, heat cycles, coolant condition and engine age can contribute to gasket deterioration. Early Warning Signs of Subaru Head Gasket Failure One of the earliest warning signs of a Subaru head gasket problem is unexplained coolant loss. Drivers may notice they need to top up coolant more frequently even though there are no obvious external leaks visible under the vehicle. Small internal leaks can allow coolant to escape slowly, particularly when the engine is hot. Engine overheating is another major warning sign. A Subaru that begins running hotter than normal, particularly during heavy traffic, long drives or warmer weather, may have cooling system issues linked to head gasket deterioration. Overheating should never be ignored because repeated high temperatures can cause significant engine damage. Another common symptom is bubbling in the coolant overflow bottle. Combustion gases leaking past the head gasket can enter the cooling system, creating pressure and bubbles inside the radiator or overflow reservoir. Some drivers may also notice a sweet smell from the engine bay caused by coolant escaping onto hot engine components. Other Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored Oil contamination can also occur in some cases. If coolant and oil begin mixing internally, the oil may appear milky or discoloured. This reduces lubrication performance and can accelerate wear throughout the engine. While not every Subaru head gasket issue produces visible oil contamination, it remains an important symptom technicians inspect during diagnosis. White smoke from the exhaust can also indicate coolant entering the combustion chamber. While condensation during cold starts is normal, persistent white smoke combined with coolant loss or overheating should be professionally investigated. Professional Diagnosis Is Essential At Wells Automotive, diagnosing Subaru cooling system issues involves far more than simply replacing parts. Proper diagnosis may include pressure testing, combustion gas testing, radiator inspection, thermostat testing and cooling fan checks. In many cases, identifying related cooling system faults early can prevent larger problems developing. Regular servicing plays an important role in reducing the likelihood of major cooling system problems. Correct coolant maintenance, periodic inspections and early diagnosis of leaks or overheating symptoms can all help extend engine life. Protecting the Long-Term Reliability of Your Subaru Subaru vehicles are engineered differently from many conventional engines, which means they benefit from technicians who understand the design characteristics of boxer engines and Subaru cooling systems. Accurate diagnosis and preventative maintenance are essential to maintaining reliability over the long term. For Subaru owners in Mornington, paying attention to early warning signs such as coolant loss, overheating or unusual engine behaviour can help avoid serious engine damage. If your Subaru is showing signs of cooling system problems, booking an inspection with Wells Automotive can help identify issues early and protect the long-term reliability of your vehicle.

Subaru Head Gasket Warning Signs Every Driver Should Know

How to Prevent Overheating Subaru vehicles are known for their durability, all-wheel drive capability and excellent performance across Australian conditions. However, like all modern vehicles, Subaru engines rely heavily on a properly functioning cooling system to maintain safe operating temperatures and long-term reliability. At Wells Automotive, we regularly inspect and repair Subaru cooling systems for drivers throughout Mornington. Many cooling system problems begin as relatively minor issues but can quickly develop into serious engine damage if left unresolved. Common Cooling System Problems in Subaru Vehicles The cooling system performs the critical task of controlling engine temperature. Coolant circulates through the engine, radiator, thermostat and heater system to remove excess heat and prevent overheating. In Subaru boxer engines, maintaining stable operating temperatures is especially important because of the engine's unique design and layout. Coolant leaks
One of the most common cooling system problems seen in Subaru vehicles is coolant leaks. These leaks may develop from radiator tanks, hoses, hose clamps, expansion tanks or water pumps. In some cases, leaks only occur when the engine reaches operating temperature, making them difficult for drivers to identify early. Degraded Radiator
Radiator deterioration is another common issue, particularly in older vehicles. Over time, plastic radiator tanks can become brittle and develop cracks. Restricted radiator flow can also reduce cooling efficiency and increase engine temperatures under load. Thermostat Failure
Thermostat problems are also regularly encountered in ageing Subaru vehicles. A faulty thermostat may fail to open correctly, restricting coolant circulation through the radiator. This can cause overheating, fluctuating temperature readings or poor heater performance. Cooling Fans
Cooling fan faults can also contribute to overheating problems. Electric cooling fans play a major role in maintaining airflow through the radiator, particularly during slow traffic or idling conditions. If fans fail to operate correctly due to electrical faults, sensor issues or worn motors, engine temperatures can rise rapidly. Coolant Contamination
Subaru owners should also pay close attention to coolant condition. Old or contaminated coolant loses its ability to control corrosion and transfer heat effectively. Using incorrect coolant specifications can also contribute to internal corrosion or reduced cooling system performance. One important factor many drivers overlook is that Subaru engines are particularly sensitive to overheating. Even a single overheating event can potentially contribute to larger problems such as warped cylinder heads or head gasket damage. Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore Cooling system problems often provide early warning signs before major damage occurs. Drivers should watch for: Rising temperature gauge readings Coolant loss Steam from the engine bay Sweet coolant smells Heater performance issues Bubbling in the overflow bottle Visible coolant leaks If any of these symptoms are present, it is important to arrange an inspection before the problem worsens. Keeping Your Subaru Reliable At Wells Automotive, Subaru cooling system inspections may involve pressure testing, radiator inspections, thermostat testing, coolant condition analysis and checks for combustion gases within the cooling system. Identifying problems early is one of the most effective ways to avoid major engine repairs. Preventative maintenance is particularly important for Subaru vehicles operating in Australian conditions. Regular coolant replacement, hose inspections and early diagnosis of leaks all help maintain reliable cooling system performance. Drivers in Mornington who notice overheating symptoms or coolant loss should arrange a professional inspection as soon as possible. Ignoring early warning signs can significantly increase repair costs and place the engine at risk. Proper cooling system maintenance helps Subaru vehicles remain reliable for many years. By keeping the radiator, coolant and associated components in good condition, owners can reduce the risk of overheating and maintain dependable performance across all driving conditions.

Common Subaru Cooling System Problems

Why Correct Coolant Maintenance Matters in Subaru Engines Modern Subaru vehicles are engineered with unique boxer engines that deliver excellent balance, all-wheel drive compatibility and reliable long-term performance. However, these engines also rely heavily on proper cooling system maintenance to operate safely and efficiently. At Wells Automotive, we regularly assist Subaru owners throughout Mornington with cooling system servicing and preventative maintenance. One of the most overlooked aspects of vehicle maintenance is coolant condition, yet it plays a major role in protecting the engine from overheating, corrosion and premature wear. More Than Just Temperature Control Coolant does far more than simply help regulate engine temperature. Modern engine coolant contains additives designed to reduce corrosion, lubricate internal cooling system components and protect metal surfaces throughout the engine and radiator system. Over time, these protective additives gradually break down. As coolant ages, its ability to manage heat transfer and corrosion protection declines. This can lead to internal corrosion, restricted coolant passages, reduced cooling efficiency and increased wear on components such as water pumps and thermostats. Subaru boxer engines place specific demands on the cooling system because of their horizontally opposed engine layout. Maintaining stable operating temperatures across both cylinder banks is essential for long-term engine durability. Using incorrect coolant specifications can also create serious problems. Different coolant types contain different chemical formulations, and mixing incompatible coolants may reduce corrosion protection or damage internal components. Incorrect coolant can also affect seals, hoses and radiator materials over time. Another issue commonly seen in neglected cooling systems is contamination. Dirt, rust particles and degraded coolant can accumulate within the system and reduce coolant flow efficiency. Restricted flow can increase operating temperatures and place additional stress on engine components. One of the major risks associated with poor coolant maintenance is overheating. Excessive engine temperatures can damage gaskets, warp cylinder heads and significantly reduce engine life. Subaru engines are particularly sensitive to overheating events, making preventative maintenance especially important. Many drivers mistakenly assume coolant only needs attention if a leak develops or the engine overheats. In reality, coolant replacement intervals are an important part of routine maintenance and should be followed carefully. The Benefits of Regular Cooling System Servicing At Wells Automotive, cooling system servicing may include: Inspecting coolant condition Pressure testing the cooling system Checking hoses and clamps Inspecting radiator condition Testing thermostat operation Checking cooling fan performance Replacing coolant to manufacturer specifications Regular servicing allows technicians to identify early warning signs before larger problems develop. Small coolant leaks, deteriorating hoses or minor radiator issues can often be corrected before they result in expensive engine repairs. Australian driving conditions can place additional demands on vehicle cooling systems. Stop-start traffic, long-distance driving and warmer operating conditions all increase the importance of proper cooling system maintenance. For Subaru owners in Mornington, maintaining the correct coolant condition is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect long-term engine reliability. Preventative maintenance helps reduce the risk of overheating, corrosion and cooling system failure while ensuring the engine continues to operate efficiently. Professional servicing from technicians familiar with Subaru vehicles helps ensure the correct coolant specifications and maintenance procedures are followed. By keeping the cooling system in proper condition, Subaru owners can help preserve vehicle performance and reduce the likelihood of expensive repairs in the future.
